About

Prior to passage of the New Jersey constitution in 1947, the New Jersey court system consisted of 17 separate courts. Each had its own standards and rules, and none answerable to another.

The constitution streamlined the Judiciary and reduced the number of courts to five.

The New Jersey court system includes the Supreme Court, which is considered the court of last resort; the Superior Court, or trial court, which includes the Appellate Division; the Tax Court and the municipal courts.

About 7 million cases are filed in the New Jersey Courts annually. More than 6 million of those cases are filed in the municipal courts.

The Chief Justice is Stuart Rabner. The Acting Administrator Director of the Courts is Judge Glenn A. Grant.
