In the spirit of Socrates’ devotion to inquiry, the Agora Philosophical Forum seeks to explore philosophical concepts, and to apply and relate those ideas to Iranian culture, history and politics. In weekly meetings, the forum fosters an environment full of friendly interaction and discussion as well as critical analysis and argumentation, to constructively debate past and current events in Iran. While dedicated to the ideals of democracy and nonviolence, Agora is independent and impartial to any political or religious parties or individuals. Above all, it aims to cultivate and extend dialogical exchange within the Iranian community, to promote critical thinking and awareness.
The name of "Agora" was used in ancient Greek cities, for an open space serving as an assembly area and backdrop for commercial, civic, social, and religious activities. Prof. Ramin Jahanbegloo chose the name when he initiated this forum since 1999 in University of Toronto.
