In Gaelic myth, the Cailleach (Irish: Scottish Gaelic: ) is a divine hag and ancestor, revered for her role in shaping the landscape and controlling the weather, especially storms and winter. The name literally translates to 'old woman, hag' and she appears in the folklore of Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. In Irish tales, she is the Hag of Beara, while in Scotland, she reigns as Beira, Queen of Winter.

Despite looking like an impromptu snapshot, the painting was meticulously staged in Degas' studio.
