The Mothers Project is an online archive of stories told in the words of mothers themselves.

When I started the project in 2010 I was a fairly new mum and was beginning to emerge from the most hectic two years of my life. I had one daughter and was due to have another, and found myself dwelling constantly on the concept of ‘motherhood’.

I’d been so shocked at how unprepared I was – my life had changed unrecognisably. As a photographer, starting personal projects was the norm and so I began a project where the women I photographed crafted their own stories to accompany their photos.

I wanted to create a forum where women could share their experiences of motherhood and see that they were not alone. ‘The Mothers Project’ has organically developed, and with it, a community of supportive women and their wildly different and amazing children. The project grows every week and now over 200 women have been featured on the main site www.the-mothers.co.uk.
